Agriculture is the core of the economy in Ethiopia
. It is the livelihood of more than 85% of the population and
constitutes nearly half of the GDP. Most of the national food
requirement is met by domestic agricultural production. In light
of this importance, the government is exerting maximum efforts
to ensure food security. To assist the government’s efforts
bear fruits, reliable and timely agricultural data are essential
for use as inputs in planning, policy and decision-making, evaluation,
and monitoring of the performance of agriculture in the country.
For
the fulfillment of the above rationale, the Central Statistical
Agency (CSA) has been conducting annual agricultural sample surveys
to provide the desired agricultural data to the government and
other users. The major data items included in the survey are:
- Area,
production and yield of crops
-
Land Utilization (crop area, grazing land, fallow land, Wood
land)
-
Farm management practices (quantity and type of inputs)
-
Livestock (type, age, purpose)
-
Selected livestock products (type and quantity)
-
Selected demographic characteristics of agricultural holders
and households.
