Ethiopian 2019 Census The fourth round Census in Ethiopia will be conducted from April 7-28, 2019. Preparations for the census have been well underway since 2015. Census cartography, three pilot censuses, and development of Census Communication Strategy were among the preparation activities that were done before the actual census enumeration. As part of the communication strategy, various communication materials have been developed, and trainings for Woreda, Zonal, Regional and Federal Communication Officers have been given. Currently, regional trainings of trainers (ToT) is being given to trainers of enumerators. Similar training will further be cascaded to each woreda of the country and over 138,000 enumerators and 37,000 supervisors will be trained at woreda level. In the Population and Housing Census Enumerators need to reach each households and count everyone in their homes or where they live. Enumerators will be collecting data about the peoples’ living conditions, race, religion, sex, educational status, health, death and many more information. The trainings are expected to equip enumerators with the knowledge to collect these data. This process requires strategies to cover the whole enumerators who will be involved in the census. The upcoming training requires more than 180,000 personnel, including enumerators, supervisors and IT coordinators. The 4th round census will be conducted using digital technology for the first time, to this end 180,000 tablets, have been purchased and updated with the necessary soft wares. In case of power outage 126,000 electric power banks have also been purchased by the Central Statistical Agency. Moreover in areas, where electrical power is not available solar power banks will be used to charge the tablets. Questionnaires, GPS, enumeration area maps and other materials important to the enumeration are uploaded and all materials are being shipped to the branch offices of Central Statistical Agency. The digital technology will help to increase the credibility and data quality of the census. Moreover, given the maps with GPS coordinates, no one will be double counted or skipped during the enumeration the 2019 Ethiopian Census. Starting April 7, 2019 the National Census will be conducted for 20 days until April 28, 2019. It is expected that it may take four to six months to release the preliminary result. In the coming Ethiopian Census data on wide range of disabilities will be collected and there will also be comprehensive enumeration refugees for the first time in the country’s census history.
